Pricing: $5/month unlimited (or $50/year which is $4.17/month)
UPDATE: Just a quick update that we continue to use and love backblaze. We could go into a long explanation of why we love it and why we think you should try it, but simply put; it just works and works well! And now, for just $95 for a 2 year plan ($3.96/month) you get unlimited backup.
Here’s a new, quick install link to help get you started: Download Backblaze
Our rating (out of 5): (based on unlimited data, $50/year pricing, ease of use…the only reason we give it 4.5 rather than a full 5 stars is the lack of mobile apps)
In the wake of Mozy stopping it’s unlimited option, BackBlaze seems the most likely to satisfy former Mozy users. Backblaze backs up everything on your computer except your operating system, applications, temporary files, or those over 9GB [UPDATE: BackBlaze now allows for unlimited file sizes, no more 9GB cap]. Use a USB or Firewire-connected drive for additional storage or backups? Backblaze will backup those too. By default, Backblaze begins to backup your PC in idle times, grabbing everything on your disk except the contents of your system and program directories, and your temp files. There’s no storage or bandwidth limit, and it will store files up to 4GB in size. Backblaze costs $5 a month which is quite reasonable.
[UPDATE: In addition to currently using Mozy as a personal backup solution, we enjoyed testing BackBlaze so much that we are now using it as well. We are grandfathered at Mozy with an unlimited data plan, but once that runs out we will probably switch to BackBlaze exclusively. In addition, so far we have not had any issues with Mozy & BackBlaze conflicting with each other. We had a lot of data to backup and it took a few days, but the speed was never throttled which we really like to see.]
In our Backblaze review we found that the software installs a control panel (Mac or Windows) and a little menu bar or system tray icon which lets you quickly see status or bring up the preferences. The control panel itself is very simple, with a big fat “backup now” button and a simple status report.
Backblaze also offers one of the best privacy and security policies of any online storage company. We highly recommend Backblaze for anyone who wants simple, secure, automated online backup.
Positives: Unlimited backup, inexpensive, can backup external drives
Negatives: Lack of mobile apps
