Using Backblaze Mobile

Access

- Select the computer you wish to view and we’ll build a list of your files – this can take from a few seconds to a few minutes depending on how many files you have backed up with Backblaze. Navigate to and choose the files you wish to download.

Experience

- Once downloaded you can view your photos, documents and spreadsheets, watch your videos or listen to your music.

Share

- Depending on the file type and the other apps on your iPhone a file can be printed, copied, emailed, posted, tweeted and more.

The days of having to shuttle files between machines on USB sticks seem like a distant memory from a simpler time. Today, it’s all about the cloud. Want to access your files from more than one machine? Nothing could be simpler: Just stick them in Dropbox (and hope there isn’t anotherauthentication bug), or Drive (courtesy of our corporate overlords at Google), or SkyDrive(developed by the benevolent behemoth that is Microsoft). To put it differently, cloud-based file sync services are easy to use and work well, but your privacy may or may not be your first priority. Not to mention the fact that these services always come with a storage quota. You can try to maximize the free storage space, but a quota is a quota. If you’re longing for an alternative, you should check out BitTorrent Sync.

This new service from BitTorrent harnesses the power of the distributed file-sharing network to keep your own private files in sync. It’s not like torrenting your files, though: BitTorrent Sync works with secret keys that let you selectively choose what to share with whom, and even supports expiring, temporary keys. Let’s walk through installing the service and sharing a folder.

Installation: Next. Next, Done!

Installation couldn’t be simpler. It’s not even a next-next-next affair, really, as it only has two steps. Two things are worth noting: BitTorrent Sync is utterly clean of any ads or any other dubious content (and it does not come with a BitTorrent client), and the only sort of special treatment it asks for is making a hole in the Windows firewall:

Initial Configuration

Once installed, run BitTorrent sync to begin the configuration process:

We’ll get to secrets in a moment. For now, pick Standard Setup (the default), and click Next. BitTorrent Sync will then ask you for a folder to sync:

It’s worth noting that you can use BitTorrent Sync to synchronize any folder, not just its own special folder.

Once you pick a folder, BitTorrent Sync will produce a secret for it:

This is a long string of characters which you can then use to connect to this folder from any other device. This is a key difference between BitTorrent Sync and other file-sync solutions: There are no user accounts, and you won’t be asked to create a password for yourself at any point in the process. Rather, each folder has one or more secrets, and that’s what you use to connect to it.

The Tour

Once you pick your first folder to sync and get a password, BitTorrent Sync will show a quick three-step tour:

The first step of the tour shows the control panel, while the next explains you can sync an unlimited number of folders, and files of any size. Finally, BitTorrent Sync shows how you can quickly copy the secret for any shared folder, to share it with family or friends:

Once you finish the tour, you’ll find yourself in the BitTorrent Sync interface proper.

Adding Folders For Sharing

One of BitTorrent Sync’s cool features is that you can add new folders from anywhere on your computer. The Shared Folders tab has an Add button which you can click for this dialog:

Once you add a folder that already contains files, BitTorrent Sync will take a few moments to index its contents. You will already be able to copy its secret and share it with other BitTorrent Sync users. Once I entered the secret for this folder on another computer running BitTorrent Sync, the other computer’s name showed up in the BitTorrent Sync window, and files started going through instantly (they were on the same LAN, but this should work over the Internet as well, assuming you’ve let the installer configure your Windows firewall).

Your Secret: It Really Is a Secret

One thing really bears another mention here: When BitTorrent Sync gives you a secret, it means it. It is a secret. Anyone who possesses this magic string of letters will be able to gain access to the folder you’ve shared, no questions asked. Yes, you will see an unexpected device name in the Devices tab, but that will be too late: By then, the hostile party may already be in possession of your files.

Advanced Secret Tactics

What if you want to allow access to a folder, but not risk anyone deleting or modifying its contents? And what if you only want to share a folder for a limited time? BitTorrent Sync has you covered: Double-click the folder, switch to the Advanced tab, and you’ll get the following:

Here you can see the folder’s existing secret, its read-only secret (for allowing permanent read-only access), and generate one-time secrets. A one-time secret can only be used once, and expires after 24 hours. That’s pretty awesome.

A Very Promising Start

BitTorrent Sync gets a lot of the basics right. Setup is a snap; you can share any folder; you don’t have to create user accounts; and the underlying file-transfer technology is, shall we say, extensively field-tested and proven. Whether or not it catches on as a mainstream means of synchronizing files — only time will tell. But this initial test shows that there’s a lot going for it.

In secure mode, the Backblaze password is not stored and must be entered each time you sign in to Backblaze using Backblaze Mobile. In either case, you should always have access to your iPhone protected with a password.

How secure are my downloaded files on my iPhone?
Files downloaded by Backblaze Mobile are stored encrypted in the Backblaze domain space on the iPhone.

Can I change my Backblaze account settings such as my password with Backblaze Mobile?
Not at this time, but you can use a browser on your iPhone or any other device to access your Backblaze account and make changes as desired.

Windows (Mac, Android, iOS coming soon): There are a ton of online syncing and storage services, but not all of them locally encrypt your data for higher security. Just out of limited beta, Tresorit is a new Dropbox alternative with client-side encryption. The company offers 5GB of free space, but for a limited time Lifehacker readers can grab 50GB free for life.

Tresorit’s biggest selling point is the strong security. Your files and folders are encrypted before they’re uploaded to the cloud. To get technical about it:

Files are encrypted with AES-256 before being uploaded to the cloud. Additional security is provided before upload by HMAC message authentication codes applied on SHA-512 hashes. Encrypted files are uploaded to the cloud using TLS-protected channels.

The company is also putting its money where its mouth is: On April 15, Tresorit is inviting the world’s hackers to try to break its encryption and win $10,000. So Tresorit is pretty confident in its security claims.

The Windows software (Mac, Android, and iOS versions coming before June) is also really easy to use. You can select any folder to be synced (as a “Tresor”), share folders with other users, and also adjust permissions of shared folders by user.

On the downside, there’s no web-based access for your files, people you share folders with will also need the software installed, and it takes a few seconds longer for your synced files to appear on another computer (probably because of the encryption that has to happen first). Other Dropbox alternatives with client-side encryption, SpiderOak and Wuala, have more features, but Tresorit’s interface is a lot more user-friendly. And it’s hard to beat 50GB of free encrypted space.

Update: Some people are reporting only getting 5GB. He received an Accounting BA degree from Corvinus University, currently he is a graduate Finance MSc student at Corvinus University and a graduate student at EVK College for Advanced Studies. During his university years he earned a lot of awards, like GE Foundation Scholar Leader, Distinguished Faculty Scholarship for multiple times and CIBS Strategy Case Study Competiton I. place. Before joining Tresorit he was demonstrator at the Department of Finance and took an internship at FHB Bank Plc.

Mr. Fejes became CTO of EPAM Systems in March of 2004 when Fathom Technology, a Hungarian software engineering firm which he co-founded and where he served as CTO, merged with EPAM Systems. In his present capacity, he ensures that all of EPAM Systems’ global offshore and nearshore software development centers are at the leading edge of industry standards for efficiency and quality. Prior to co-founding Fathom Technology Mr. Fejes was a chief software architect/line manager with Microsoft Great Plains (Microsoft Business Solutions). He also served as chief software architect of Scala Business Solutions. He is the recipient of numerous awards for programming excellence and has worked extensively in the US and Russia.

Levente Buttyán received the M.Sc. degree in Computer Science from the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME) in 1995, and earned the Ph.D. degree from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology – Lausanne (EPFL) in 2002. In 2003, he joined the Department of Telecommunications at BME, where he currently holds a position as an
Associate Professor and leads the Laboratory of Cryptography and Systems Security (CrySyS). His main research interests are in the design and analysis of secure protocols and privacy enhancing mechanisms for wired and wireless networks. He also works on security in cloud computing, and mechanisms to defend against targeted cyber attacks on critical infrastructures.

Founder and President of the Hungarian Biotechnology Association, a representative organization active in lobbying for the interests of its member companies and the biotechnology sector in Hungary. As a genuine entrepreneur, he has founded or co-founded 13 companies over the past 15 years, including a corporate finance consulting company focused on high-tech Hungarian start-ups, and Hungary’s largest online second-hand book store. He was Vice president of the American Chamber of Commerce in Hungary for 2 years, and President of the Junior Achievement Foundation Hungary from 1997 until 2006. Mr. Duda is a member of the Board of the Hungarian Association for Innovation. Besides running a course at the University of Szeged, he regularly holds presentations at conferences and various public events. Today we are proud to release the SpiderOak 5.0 Beta. It comes as the result of a lot of hard work and planning and we are excited to get it into the hands of our users. The most significant addition is SpiderOak Hive which makes syncing data between your various devices simple and easy. NEW FEATURES

SpiderOak Hive: We adopted a simple approach to syncing data across all devices by creating the SpiderOak Hive folder. Simply drag and drop files or folders into this folder and they will automatically sync to your other devices.
OS Integration for Windows (Mac and Linux soon to follow): Granting right-click access functions via Explorer now allows you to backup, share, and view historical versions.

ENHANCEMENTS

ShareRoom Enhancement: Users can now add passwords to their ShareRooms which adds an additional layer of security when sharing important files.
Remote Diagnostics: We added a capability for remote diagnostics to help when troubleshooting problems with customer support. This option is disabled by default. You must explicitly enabled it. Diagnostic reports consist of metadata such as program and OS version information, file system types, program log files, folder and file names. Reports do not include backup data, passwords, or encryption information.
Password Enhancement: As a new user, you must now change your password upon setting up your first device when JavaScript was disabled during signup and a temporary password was automatically generated.
ShareRoom Enhancement: We added clarification to the ShareRoom creation wizard

FIXES

LAN sync: Fixed a bug with LAN sync, allowing the client to recover from certain error conditions
UI / View Tab: Fixed a bug that sometimes caused the UI to erroneously disable the View tab in the client after displaying the “out of space” popup window.
AppIndicator framework: Switch system tray icon to use AppIndicator framework on Ubuntu.
Backup: Fixed a bug which prevents category size indicator on basic backup tab from updating without restarting the client
Downloads: Fixed a bug that prevented downloads from resuming after a network failure.
Uninstalling SpiderOak: Fixed a bug on Windows which reports publisher info as ‘unknown’ when uninstalling SpiderOak.
Sync: Fixed a bug that sometimes prevented sync from detecting a moved folder properly, instead considering it a deletion
Backup: Fixed a bug causing backup to fail under a very rare edge case

QUESTIONS ABOUT HIVE?

Here are five questions and answers we anticipate users having.

1. What is SpiderOak Hive? How does it work?

SpiderOak Hive creates a simple way to sync data between your various devices. All you have to do is place files and/or folders inside your SpiderOak Hive and the data will automatically appear on any other device running SpiderOak. Easy.

2. Where do I find the SpiderOak Hive folder?

A shortcut to SpiderOak Hive will appear automatically on your desktop. You can feel free to move the SpiderOak Hive folder to any convenient location of your choosing. Depending on the operating system, SpiderOak Hive will also appear in the file system browser as follows: Windows Explorer –> Documents folder; Mac Finder –> “/Users//SpiderOak Hive/”; Linux –> Home folder.

3. Can I still backup my files from their original locations using the SpiderOak application? Do I have to use SpiderOak Hive?

SpiderOak Hive was designed to run on top of the existing SpiderOak application; as such, you can still select specific files and/or folders for backup using the ‘Backup’ tab inside the application. We view this ability to create a unique and structured backup set as a core function of SpiderOak and have no plans to get rid of this functionality.

4. How do I get SpiderOak Hive?

Currently – SpiderOak Hive is in Beta and available by clicking on the following link:https://spideroak.com/getbuild?beta=yes. (or 64-bit Windows) As soon as you install the new version, SpiderOak Hive will appear automatically on your desktop.

5. If I would prefer to use SpiderOak Hive as opposed to selecting data to back up and sync inside the SpiderOak application, how do I make this transition?

This is simple! All you have to do is drag and drop all the items in your current backup set over to the SpiderOak Hive folder. This action will cause SpiderOak to effectively move this data over to Hive which will take a few moments to process. Upon completion, you will be done and fully ready to use your SpiderOak Hive folder. Please remember that future files must be saved into your SpiderOak Hive folder to ensure they are being backed up and synced.

Update: The beta download links may have delivered a 32-bit build to Windows users with 64-bit computers, rendering the OS Integration feature inoperative.
