Windows/OS X: Cubby is a new cloud syncing service with one major difference from its competition: It doesn’t have any storage limits when you’re syncing from computer to computer.

Cubby, from the makers of your favorite remote desktop service, LogMeIn, is a file-syncing service just like Dropbox, Google Drive, SkyDrive, and other cloud storage services out there, but it has two major differences that set it apart:

You can sync any folder—not just your main “cubby” folder—to the cloud and your other machines. Just right-click any folder and tell it to sync with Cubby. No symlinks, checkbox menus, or other tweaks necessary.
You get 5GB of storage in the cloud (that is, accessible from your browser), but you can sync an unlimited amount of data between your computers. That means if you want to sync your giant iTunes library, for example, you can do so without paying a cent.

Cubby (still in beta) appears to be a good mix between SugarSync and Dropbox. Apps are available for both iOS and Android. Cubby offers 5GB for free and full priced plans have not yet been announced.

Dropbox has been the reigning king of cloud storage and syncing for a few years now, but the competition is getting intense. LogMeIn, which is best known for its remote access apps, has just launched a cloud storage solution of its own called Cubby. Not only does Cubby come with 5GB of free storage to Dropbox’s 2GB, but it also implements a peer-to-peer sharing system that will help you get around that limit.

What types of files can I store in a cubby?

Anything. It’s that simple. A cubby is just a folder. Anything you can normally store in a folder can be stored in a cubby.

You can’t rename a folder while it is a cubby.

Where does my stuff go once I make a cubby?

When you cubbies, nothing moves. Here’s an example.

You make “Summer Photos” into a cubby on your home computer.
- Where are the files? Exactly where they were: On your home computer’s hard drive, in the same place.
Now you install Cubby at work and sync “Summer Photos” to your work computer.
- Where are the files? Now they are also on your work computer’s hard drive.
Now you turn on the cloud and share “Summer Photos” with your friend.
- Where are the files? Now they are also on your friend’s computer and in the cloud, which means they are stored on LogMeIn’s secure online servers.

Any folder can become a cubby?

You can make any standard folder on your computer into a cubby.

Exceptions:

When the folder is a subfolder of an existing cubby
When the folder is already the parent of an existing cubby
When the folder is on a CD-ROM, network or portable drive (for example, any drive connected via USB)
When the folder has a Windows or System directory among its children, or one of its parents is a Windows or System directory

How do I share a cubby with specific people?

When you share a cubby, your friends or colleagues will see it listed in their own cubby list. Any changes made to the cubby’s contents will appear to all cubby members.

When should I use sharing? Use sharing when you want specific people to have read and write access to an entire cubby.

Share via the Cubby desktop application

Open Cubby, the desktop application.
If the folder you want to share isn’t a cubby, drag it onto the Cubby interface.
Click the Share icon. Don’t see the icon? Hold your mouse over the cubby.

How do I share a cubby with the public?

You can share a cubby with the public. That means anyone with the link will be able to see files in your cubby.

When should I use a public link? Make a public link when you want anyone with the link to have read-only access to an entire cubby or an individual file. Folks with the link can download the file or cubby contents, but they won’t stay in sync.

Create a public link via the Cubby application

Use the Cubby application when you want to make a link for an entire cubby.

Open Cubby, the desktop application.

How do I sync cubbies between computers?

Syncing means you want your stuff to be the same on all of your computers. Any cubby can be synced to any computer running the Cubby desktop application.

Important: Install Cubby on each computer that you want to keep in sync.

Here’s how to stay in sync:

Create a cubby using the desktop application or cubby.com.
Go to the computer that you want to keep in sync.
Add the cubby to the computer:
1. Open Cubby, the desktop application.
2. In Cubby, click add to this computer for the cubby that you want to sync.

Once you add the cubby to your computer, syncing is on. We take care of the rest.

How do I stop syncing?

On the Cubby desktop application, clear the box next to the computer name.

What’s unlimited peer-to-peer syncing?

Unlimited peer-to-peer (P2P) syncing means no storage limits when you’re syncing between your own computers. Storage limits only apply to cubbies that are synced to the cloud.

Here’s an example.

The situation:
- You have 20 GB of photos on your computer at home
- You want all 20 GB of photos to be available on your computer at work
The “unlimited peer-to-peer” solution:
- Make your “vacation photos” folder into a cubby on your home computer
- Open the Cubby desktop application at work and turn on syncing for “vacation photos”
- You’ll see all of your photos at work – all 20 GB worth
- No limits between peers. That means no limits between two of your own computers.
  Important: Computers can only sync peer-to-peer when they are powered on.

Remember: To avoid storage limits, make sure the cubby does not sync with the cloud. Without the cloud you gain the benefit of unlimited P2P syncing, but you won’t be able to access the cubby via cubby.com or mobile app, and you won’t be able to share it or link to it.

How do I restore a deleted file?

When a file is deleted from a cubby, all revisions remain available in the file’s archive.

Here’s how you recover a deleted file from the archive:

Go to cubby.com.
Click a cubby.
In the upper-right corner of the page, click show deleted.
Right-click the file you want to retrieve and select restore or view archive > restore.

How do I recover an old version of a file?

When a change is made to a file in a cubby, each revision is saved in the file’s archive.

Here’s how you recover a version from the archive:

Go to cubby.com.
Click a cubby.
Right-click a file and select view archive.
Select an archived version and click restore.

What’s your copyright policy? What can I share using Cubby?

Go ahead and share anything that’s yours, meaning anything you have the legal right to share with others.

Usually this means documents or anything you made yourself, like home movies, photos, or music you wrote. Don’t share anything for which you don’t own the copyright, unless of course you have permission from the copyright owner.

Buying and downloading music and movies on the Internet does not give you the right to share them with others in a cubby. Naturally you can keep your music or video libraries in sync across your own computers. When in doubt, you should probably just avoid sharing downloaded music and movies via Cubby.

In short, you can keep your own stuff in sync via Cubby, but don’t use it to distribute content you don’t have the right to distribute.

You should back up your hard drive. You’ve heard it a million times, but most people don’t do it. So we’re going to make it easy: CrashPlan is the best backup tool. It’s what you should use to back up your data, both on-site and off-site.

Online backup services all share mostly the same feature set. They normally provide capped plans for relatively low monthly costs, or unlimited plans for a little more; they offer strong encryption for keeping your data safe when it leaves your hard drive. Here are the basics:

Automatic, set-it-and-forget-it backup. You set your backup schedule (nightly, weekly, by-the-minute) and CrashPlan takes care of the rest—you don’t have to remember to back up once you’ve set it up.
Back up locally. You can back up to any computer on your network, or any connected external drive. Assuming your house didn’t burn down, the local backup is the one you’ll go to first. (Just keep in mind that the off-site backup needs to be there in the event of a more catastrophic loss, like fire or theft.
Unlimited file size.
Incremental backup means CrashPlan only backs up the bits of data that have changed in a file—which means it doesn’t have to back up the entire file every time something changes. This makes a big difference when you’ve got limited upload bandwidth.
CrashPlan keeps your files forever. Even if you delete a file locally, if it’s been backed up to CrashPlan, you can restore it at any time unless you’d prefer they don’t.
You can restore a file at any time from the CrashPlan client or via their web app.

CrashPlan shares most of the features above with most popular online backup services. Here’s what sets CrashPlan apart:

Free on-site and off-site backup. That is, you can back up locally to any folder or hard drive connected to your computer (free on-site) or you can back up to a folder on a friend’s computer (free off-site). If you really don’t want to pay for backup but you want on-site and off-site redundancy (frankly, if you’re backing up, off-site is a must), then CrashPlan let’s you do so for free. That’s pretty cool.
When you are ready to pay for your backup, CrashPlan has the most bang for your buck, featuring cheap unlimited online backup with a premium CrashPlan+ account. Unlimited online backup for a single computer is as little as $3/month. An unlimited family plan (2-10 computers) starts as low as $6/month.

CrashPlan is packed with useful features, and it’s easily the most cost-effective backup option, but it’s not as simple to set up as some of its alternatives. We’ve walked through how to set up an automated, bulletproof file back up solution with CrashPlan to walk you through the process. It’s not too difficult, but you do need to set aside a few minutes to understand how it works.

For online storage, Backblaze is probably the most compelling alternative to CrashPlan. It’s roughly $4/month per computer for unlimited storage (meaning if you’re backing up more than one computer, it’s going to add up a lot faster than CrashPlan’s 2-10 computer family plan). Backblaze is a little more user friendly than CrashPlan, and it has a very cool Locate My Computer feature that helps you track a lost or stolen device. (Sort of like Prey, a free tool we’ve walked through how to set up.)

Mozy used to be our favorite online backup service, until they dropped their unlimited backups and introduced per-GB plans that made the service considerably more expensive than any of the competition.

For some, file-syncing service Dropbox is all they backup they need. It could not be simpler: Put a file in your Dropbox folder, it’s backed up to all your Dropbox-connected computers and to Dropbox’s servers. Dropbox isn’t intended to be a backup service, though, and for large backups, it’s not particularly well suited to the task. Depending on your backup needs, however, it could be a good option.

Last, there’s the non-off-site option that’s built into Windows: Windows Backup. It’s dead simple to use and doesn’t cost you a cent, so if you’re not compelled to perform off-site backups, it’ll do the trick in a pinch (as long as you have an external drive to back up to). Just remember: If tragedy strikes in the form of a fire, for example, or theft, then your on-site backup is useless. If you care about your data enough to back it up, you should be using an online backup service in addition to your local backups, or at least using something like Dropbox to back up the really important stuff alongside your onsite backup.

GigaOM today cited sources about an April release of Google Drive, with a 1GB free storage limit. Today we received a tip from an anonymous but reliable source letting us know that the April release date was in fact accurate, until it was recently changed to the “week of April 16th.” What’s more interesting is the earlier reported storage limit. It has been said that Google Drive will have a 1GB limit but the leaked screenshot we’ve obtained from our tipster shows otherwise. Based off of what we see below, Drive users are going to be privy to 2GB of free storage, instead of the rumored 1GB.

Although the above image clearly states 2GB of free space, our tipster makes claim that there will possibly be up to 5GB’s of free storage with referrals and other similar incentives. I guess we’ll just have to wait until April to know for sure.

The long-awaited, much-rumored Google Drive—these days assumed to be something Dropbox-like but from the big G—is likely going to be launched the first week of April,according to GigaOm‘s Om Malik.

According to the details from my sources, Google is going to offer 1 Gb of storage space for free, but will charge for more storage. The market leader Dropbox currently offers 2 Gb for free. Google’s product will come with a local client and the web interface will look much like the Google Docs interface. Interestingly, it will launch for Google Apps customers and will be domain specific as well. Google has also built an API for third party apps with this service so folks can store content from other apps in the Google drive. My sources are impressed, so far with what they have seen.

If he’s right, it sounds like the GDrive will look a lot like what we saw leaked in February. Malik peppers his rumor with several maybes, primarily because GDrive rumors have been floating around since our ancestors first spied a monolith.

The question is: Is it going to be worth using Google Drive once it’s released? I’m a pretty loyal Dropbox customer at this point, and I know many who are. If Google’s going to make it worthwhile, it’s going to have to do something for users that they aren’t already getting from Dropbox. Otherwise they’re just going to be in another Google+ situation. (Oh, and 1GB seems awfully paltry, especially considering that my free Gmail account has over 7GB of storage space.)

Assuming Malik’s “well placed sources” are correct, I guess we’ll find out in April. Let’s hear what you think in the comments.
