Throughout the first half of this year, technology giants have competed in what seems like an arms race of gigabytes. In just the past few weeks, Google, Microsoft, and Amazon have significantly increased cloud storage allotments for their customers. And today, we’re happy to share that Box is removing storage limits for our Business customers.
This may seem like the escalation of a storage war, but we’re actually approaching the end of one.
We’ve all benefited from dramatic improvements in storage density. In the past two decades, the cost of storage has dropped by a factor of more than 22,000. Every industry– from manufacturing to healthcare– has benefited in some significant way from the efficiency gains caused by the rapidly decreasing cost of storage, as these improvements have catalyzed the explosion of data that can be created, stored, manipulated and made useful.
As our own storage costs decreased over the past nine years, Box has regularly passed along those economies of scale to our customers. We’ve offered unlimited storage to customers of our Enterprise plan since 2010, and we’ve found that removing storage as a consideration lets companies focus on driving business value and more seamlessly rolling Box out organization-wide. Enterprises no longer worry about storage quotas by users, keeping versions of data, or sending large files around.
Storage only matters when it’s a roadblock, and we’re excited to make these limits a thing of the past for our Business customers as well. Competition for enterprise customers will no longer be about how much information a solution enables them to store, but rather, what it helps them do with that information.

They’re choosing strategic partners that deliver on the promise of productivity on any platform, any device, anywhere.
At Box, we’re focused on delivering an open platform that helps our customers leverage this new model to make users as productive and collaborative as possible, no matter what tools they use. I’m thrilled to introduce the next step in this strategy, with a new set of integrations between Box and Microsoft for customers using Office 365. These integrations will provide secure, mobile collaboration and content management that’s tightly tied to where users are creating content, including:
- Box for Office 2013 Desktop: Users can easily open, edit, share and save any file from Box seamlessly within Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
- Box for Outlook 2013 Desktop: Box streamlines email workflow, enabling users to share links to files already stored in Box and convert document attachments to secure Box shared links.
The new integrations will be available in beta this fall for all Box customers (email us if you’d like to get on the beta list,) with Office Online integrations coming thereafter. Today’s storage update is effective immediately for new and existing Business customers, and we will partner with organizations with extreme storage requirements to develop a customized content migration and management strategy.
As today’s announcement shows, this is a rapidly evolving market and we’re continuing to invest disproportionately in building new capabilities that make content stored on our platform more valuable than ever. It’s why Box is used in over 240,000 businesses, and becoming the standard at enterprises like GE, P&G, Schneider Electric, Eli Lilly, Gap and Nationwide Insurance.
